Last Friday, Gervonta “Tank” Davis announced he was dropping the WBA super featherweight title to move up to lightweight. The fastest rising American fighter today, the atomic-punching Davis is only 24 years old. “Tank“ is facing a big step up in competition. Fighting in one of the deepest weight classes in boxing, a division made famous by the likes of Roberto Duran, Shane Mosley, and Pernell Whitaker. With a little help from Twitter, here are three lightweight opponents we’d love Gervonta Davis to step into the ring against.
Devin Haney
Not old enough to legally drink, Devin Haney fights with the skill, maturity, and composure of a 10-year vet. The Bay Area native’s blend of speed, size and IQ provides an intriguing challenge for the much shorter Davis. Haney broke the internet once, thanks to Blac Chyna. Can he do it again by beating “Tank”?
Ryan Garcia
In many ways, Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis are polar opposites. “The Flash” Garcia is a tall, lanky swift-handed heartthrob. The perfect foil to the compact, rugged power-puncher in Davis. While neither young buck has scratched the surface of his prime, both have amassed massive followings that will certainly make this dream bout a must-see fight.
Vasyl Lomachenko
You knew it was coming. Ever since Gervonta Davis established himself as a “can’t miss” prospect, boxing fans have been clamoring for a collision between “Tank” and reigning Pound-for-Pound king Vasyl Lomachenko. As Loma eyes the winner of Richard Commey vs. Teofimo Lopez (two other lightweights we’d love to see “Tank” face), a Gervonta Davis super-fight ominously looms in the distance. Lomachenko is already 31, so we hope it happens sooner than later.
