Promoter Eddie Hearn spoke today in an interview about possible opponents for Canelo Alvarez this coming September.
“It’s a case of everybody wanting the Caleb Plant fight. We’re having discussions now with their team, we hope they’ll become more advanced as the week progresses because we wanna make a call probably next week on the fight that Canelo will take in September. And if we can’t get the Caleb Plant fight, obviously we’ll need another dance partner for September.”
When asked about other opponents, either at 160 or 175, as Canelo had previously gone up to 175 to face Sergey Kovalev, Hearn responded, “He’s not going back to 160 ever. So his choices are to defend his championships at 168. But I think he prefers to take on champions.
Other potential candidates for Canelo include light heavyweights Dimitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev. “You know you have Joe Smith, Dimitry Bivol, Artur Beterbiev. Dimitry Bivol is probably the easiest fight to make because he worked with us. But Artur Beterbiev is a fight that Canelo sickly wants. He’s talked about that fight and knows how hard Beterbiev punches, and Canelo is a competitor. If you tell him that’s not the fight to take, he’ll want to take it.”
Canelo has remained incredibly active over the course of this pandemic, having fought three times in the past 10 months. Whoever Canelo fights in September, whether it’s against Caleb Plant or another champion, it’s clear that Canelo is hungry and wants the best possible fights.
