This past April, pound-for-pound king Vasyl Lomachenko called rival Gervonta Davis the “best fighter on Twitter.” With tweets like the ones below, it’s hard not to give him that title (warning: language):
That got us thinking, who could challenge the Baltimore-born “Tank” for his Twitter trash-talk throne? Turns out, quite a few stars of the sport can make weight at 280 characters. Here’s Boxing Empire’s list of boxing’s hardest-hitting Twitter fingers:
Adrien Broner – @AdrienBroner
Before Davis, Floyd Mayweather Jr. publically took another brash blue-chipper under his wing. Adrien Broner punctuated his endless smack talk with his prodigious boxing talent. In the ring, he was a four-division world champion. Outside the ring, he was on Twitter polling his followers on which round he should KO his opponent in:
Unfortunately for “The Problem,” the 30-year-old Cincy native’s keyboard confidence outstripped his talent, losing fights to Manny Pacquiao, Mikey Garcia, and Shawn Porter while making more noise outside the ring with numerous brushes with the law.
Tyson Fury – @Tyson_Fury
The “Gypsy King” is a natural shit-talker, whether it be at a presser, on a WWE mic or over Twitter. While his tweets have become more advertiser-friendly as of late, the lineal heavyweight champ has the receipts to prove that he seems destined to be on a Comedy Central Roast sooner than later.
Occasionally, the 31-year-old Fury will dust off his prime Twitter form to throw a quick jab:
Jermell Charlo – @TwinCharlo
You won’t have to dig deep on his feed to find Jermell Charlo trash-talking. Pinned the top of his Twitter profile is this literal verbal knockout:
A quick peruse down his tweet history reveals the 29-year-old Texan mouthing off to Roberto Garcia, Jarrett Hurd and Demetrius Andrade in quick succession. Brandon Marshall should think twice before stepping into a boxing ring because Charlo has the smoke for everyone, including star wide receivers:
While the Charlo twins are typically joined at the hip, they could not be more different over Twitter. While Jermall Charlo engages in interweb banter, his tweets are typically less abrasive than his identical twin brother’s:
Claressa Shields @Claressashields
Claressa “T-Rex” Shields, 24, is a high-volume pressure fighter in the ring and on Twitter, constantly engaging with keyboard opponents who dare troll her.
Terence Crawford – @Terencecrawford
Omaha-native Terence Crawford uses his Twitter account for two reasons: 1. to cheer on his Nebraska Cornhuskers and Green Bay Packers and 2. to catch a body. While the 32-year-old WBO champ might not be fighting the best welterweights in the ring, he’s certainly not pulling any punches against them over social media:
“Bud” is also a compassionate trash talker. After his bitter rival Errol Spence wrecked his car, Crawford was first on the scene with thoughtful words:
