After nearly losing welterweight superstar Errol Spence Jr. earlier this week, the boxing world was hit with another gut punch on Saturday. Junior middleweight Patrick Day was hospitalized for a traumatic brain injury after suffering a 10th round knockout at the hands of Charles Conwell on the DAZN Oleksandr Usyk vs. Chazz Witherspoon undercard.
After the brutal KO, the 27-year-old laid unconscious on the canvas for a long time before being taken out on a stretcher. The New York-native is in “extremely critical condition” after being put in a medically-induced a coma. Just a heads up, some viewers may find the video of the knockout distressing:
His promoter Lou DiBella has been giving updates about Day’s condition.
The boxing world, which is still reeling from the loss of Maxim Dadashev in July, has rallied around Day, a popular fighter who was a 2012 Golden Gloves champion.
Conwell, a 2016 U.S. Olympian, was visibly upset in the ring after his victory, expressed his concern for his fallen opponent on social media.
We’re praying for a better day for Patrick, his family, and friends.
